About the City Jalandhar
In ancient times, the district or Kingdom of Jalandhar comprised the whole of the Upper Doabas from the Ravi to the Satluj. According to the Padama Purana, as quoted by General Conningham the country takes its name from the great Daitya King Danava Jalandhara the son of the Ganga by Ocean.
The district is named after Jalandhar, a demon king, who finds a mention in the Puranas and Mahabharta. According to another legend, Jalandhar was the capital of the kingdom of lav, son of Rama. According to yet another version Jalandhar is said to have derived its name from the vernacular term `Jalandhar means area inside the water, i.e. tract laying between the two rivers Satluj and Beas, still another name of Jalandhar had been Trigartta, as it was waters by three rivers, Satluj, Beas and Ravi. Jalandhar is located on the intensively irrigated plain between the Beas and Sutlej rivers. Harappa and Mohenjodaro are the sites where remains of the Indus Valley Civilization have been found extensively. The archaeological exploration made during the recent years have pushed the antiquity of the Jalandhar District of the Harappa period. The city is well known for its production of sports equipment, leather goods and rubber goods, auto parts. Many major leather manufacturers are based there, the largest being Gee Kay International who supply a variety of leather products ranging from garments to tool bags around the world. Many major sports equipment manufacturers such as BDM, Cosco, JJ Jonex, Spartan and F.C. Sondhi,PAUL TRADERS are based there. In sports goods, some the world's most well known line for football, cricket, and hockey equipment are made in Jalandhar. Major sports giants such as Adidas, Reebok, Dunns, and Mitre outsource from Jalandhar. Attractions of Jalandhar city Cantonment Gate Jalandhar Cantonment is one of the oldest contonments in India, the construction of which was started in 1848 after the first Anglo-Sikh War, when the British settled in Northern India. The original scope of this cantonment was limited to troops to quell disturbances from adjoining States for the maintenance of peace and order. The departure of British from India and subsequent partition of the country changed the complexion of the Cantonment. It has gained tremendous importance on account of its nearness to the border with Pakistan. The Cantonment is located between latitude 30 degree 18' and longitude 75 degree 37' on the South West and at a distance of 2 Km from Cantonment Railway Station and 5 Km from City Railway Station. It is situated beside Grand Trunk Road at a distance of 89 Km from Amritsar and 371 Km from Delhi. It covers an area of 5.87 sq.miles. It is on Amritsar-Delhi Broad Guage Main Line. A Class-I airfield at Adampur is situated at a distance of 19Km. The airfield is linked with Jalandhar Cantonment by rail and road. Catholic Cathedral The cathedral, with its rare and captivating design, was started by representatives of His Holiness, the Pope its Kartarpur Gurudwara: Located 16 km from the main city, built by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjun Devji, in 1656 AD Saheed Bhagat Singh Museum A museum at Khatkal Kalan, the native village of the great Martyr Sardar Bhagat Singh, was inaugurated on his 50th death anniversary. It was earlier in Jalandhar district, now became part of Nawanshahr district. To pay homage to the great revolutionary martyrs of the Punjab, who laid down their lives for the liberation of their motherland, all their memorable belongings are displayed here. The half burnt ashes of Sardar Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev including the blood soaked sand and blood stained newspaper in which their ashes were wrapped are preserved and exhibited in the museum. One page of the Lahore Conspirace Case’s Judgement through which martyr Kartar Singh Sarabha was sentenced to death and on which Sardar Bhagat Singh put some notes is also exhibited in the museum. A copy of holy Gita having S. Bhagat Singh’s signatures which was handed over to him in Lahore Jail, and his other personal belongings are displayed here. The painting of the revolutionaries and Gadrites who inspired S. Bhagat Singh to jump into the freedom struggle are also displayed in the museum. A big bronze statue in the memory of the great martyr installed in front of the museum remind us of his great deeds. Science City Pushpa Gujral Science City offers a blend of education, curiosity and fun to ensure longer and repeated visits. The project is aimed at cultivating an interest in science through open-ended exploration away from text books and black boards, with a scientific approach to problem solving. The project has something for everyone, regardless of age, education, profession or social strata and is intended to make science accessible to people who are not part of the formal education system. The total cost of the Science City Project is Rs.100 crores. It is a joint project of the Government of India and Government of Punjab. Government of India will contribute Rs.70 crore for capital expenses (Buildings and Exhibits) where as Punjab Government will provide Rs.30 cores in terms of land and other infra structural facilities. Tulsi Mandir An ancient monument in the City is the temple of Vrinda, wife of Jalandhara, in the Kot Kishan Chand locality. It is now also known as Tulsi Mandir. On one side of the temple is a tank which is said to have been the bathing place of the demon Jalandhara. Sodal Mandir The temple of a child deity where wishes are fulfilled. Thousands of devotees congregate here during the month of September. Gurudwara Tham Sahib Kartarpur town in Jalandhar district,was founded by the fifth Guru Sri Arjun Dev Ji. He visited Kartarpur in 1598, and stuck his walking stick fast in the ground, exclaming, "This shall be the support of our faith". The village which rapidly thrived under his protection and patronage, is now a town of considerable importance. Guru Arjun's stick is still shown to the pilgrims. It is a stout piece of sandalwood, known as Tham. This shrine is called Gurdwara 'Tham Sahib'. Panch Mandir It was got built by the founder of the Kapurthala State, Fateh Singh Ahluwalia. The prime dome in the centre is surrounded by several smaller temples dedicated to different deities. It is the most striking building in the city of wonder architecture. Its replica was exhibited in the pre-partition Punjab Museum at Lahore. Devi Talab Mandir Devi Talab Mandir Devi Talab Mandir is located about one km from the railway station. The old Devi Talab has been renovated and in its centre, a new temple has been built. Recently a model of Amarnath Yatra has been built in the premises. An old temple of goddess Kali also stands by the side of the Devi Talab. The gilded Mandir is famous for the 'Hariballabh Sangeet Sammelan' held every year in December at its precincts for the past 125 years. Famous classical music exponents - both instrumental and vocal come together and perform at this gathering. In Devi Talab, there is a large masonry 200 year old tank sacred to Hindus. Shiv Mandhir Shiv Mandhir The temple situated at Gur Mandi near Imam Nasir mausoleum dates back to the Lodhi Era. Believed to be built by the Nawab of Sultanpur Lodhi, the mandir is a blend of Muslim Hindu architecture. The main gate is built in the style of a mosque while the rest of the building is in Hindu style. There is a legend that when Jalandhar was Nawabs territory, he had eyed a newly married Hindu girl who was a devotee of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva in the form of a serpent saved her honour. Awed by the appearance of this serpent the Nawab apologised to the girl and built the temple on her bidding. Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi Guru Hargobind visited the city of Jalandhar during his tour of Doaba area. Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi in Basti Shaikh, Jalandhar city, stands on the spot where Guruji granted interview to a Muslim holy saint popularly known as Shaikh Darvesh. The saint blindfolded his eyes so that he could swear before the Mughal authorities that he had not seen the Guru. The great Guru had in depth discussion with the Shaikh Darvesh about spiritual matters which created good impact on the holy man. How to reach Jalandhar Air Chandigarh and Amritsar both have airports are connected to other cities in India by regular flights. Road The entire state is connected through an extensive network of medalled roads. State Highways connect major cities to the state capital. Train Punjab is extensively linked to the other parts of the country by rail. Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Pathankot, and Jalandhar are the major railway hubs in the state |
